ONE DAY AT A TIME

Between the window and the door on the wall of the garage, where he could read it every time he drove in or out, my father had the following credo written on a big colorful poster. I have searched for its origin, not found one, which leads me to believe my father, a writer, to be the author. I altered it to suit me, by adding Christ.

With no regret for the past,
no worry for the future,
I will live today
as if this were my only day.
I live today as if my whole existence
were telescoped down
to this single day before me.

I will live today
as if this were the only day
left for me to allow
the Christ spirit to shine from within.

I will live today as if this were
the only day left for me
to accomplish all that is best in me —
the only day left for me
to conquer all that is worst in me.

I must contemplate myself
surrounded by the circumstances,
people and conditions
I wish to achieve.

Amen.

And so it was.
